An Afternoon of Prestige
From Broad Chalke to The Ritz to Buckingham Palace!!!
20th May 2025, beginning with the elegant prelude at The Ritz before transitioning into the grandeur of the Buckingham Palace Garden Party.
The day began with a sense of anticipation and refinement at The Ritz, where a light lunch set the perfect tone for the prestigious event ahead. Seated beneath glittering chandeliers and surrounded by the soft hum of conversation, we savoured delicate prawn delights and the finest pastries, accompanied by a perfectly steeped cup of Darjeeling tea. The opulent surroundings and gilded mirrors reflecting the afternoon light instilled an air of timeless luxury – an ideal taster of what was to come.
Leaving The Ritz, We stepped onto Piccadilly, where the pulse of London carried us towards Buckingham Palace. The anticipation built with each passing landmark, until at last, the grandeur of the palace gates came into view.
Upon arrival at the Garden Party the atmosphere was effortlessly regal. The event, hosted by the Prince and Princess of Wales unfolded seamlessly, a masterclass in tradition and elegance. The presence of Princess Eugenie, Zara Tindall, Duke of Edinburgh Edward and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester added to the day’s distinction.
The Yeomen of the Guard, adorned in their striking Tudor uniforms, stood in dignified formation, a living emblem of centuries-old tradition. Their presence gave the event a sense of deep-rooted history, reinforcing the significance of the occasion.
Throughout the afternoon the music from various brass bands wove through the air like a gilded thread, carrying melodies that elevated the already majestic atmosphere. The notes of classical pieces and ceremonial marches harmonized beautifully with the laughter and polite conversation of the distinguished guests.
The palace gardens, with their sprawling emerald lawns and vibrant floral displays, were breath taking, but it was the lake that truly captured the heart – a shimmering expanse of tranquillity at the heart of the royal retreat. Standing by its edge, watching the water ripple gently under the soft afternoon sun, I couldn’t help but reflect on the privilege of being part of such an occasion.
One of the most memorable moments for myself came in the form of an extended conversation with Princess Eugenie. In an exchange that flowed effortlessly, she spoke with warmth and authenticity, sharing insights into her passions, her philanthropic endeavours, and even a few light-hearted observations about the day. Despite the prestige of the setting, our conversation felt natural and personal – a rare glimpse into the genuine grace of a royal presence. For Karen it was walking through the magnificent, imposing main gates at the front entrance to Buckingham Palace, something she never thought she would do, indeed most people never will!
From the impeccable selection of cakes and delicate sandwiches to the seamless interactions between guests and royals, the garden party unfolded without flaw. There was even Smoked Chalke Stream Trout and Watercress on the menu, every element worked in perfect harmony, ensuring that the experience was not only prestigious but profoundly memorable – a day where tradition, elegance, and human connection blended into an exquisite celebration.
As the afternoon drew to a close and the last notes of the brass bands lingered in the warm air, I found myself reflecting on the profound privilege of attending such a distinguished event. From the grandeur of Buckingham Palace to the seamless elegance of the Garden Party, every moment was one of connection, tradition, and celebration.
We are incredibly grateful to the community, organizations, and all those who made this experience possible. It was an honour to be selected to walk through the palace gardens alongside distinguished guests, and to witness first-hand the warmth and graciousness of the Royal Family. This opportunity was not just a moment in time, but a lifelong memory – one that I will cherish deeply.
Thank you to everyone who played a part in making this day so extraordinary. Your dedication, generosity, and commitment to honouring service and contribution made this event truly special. We left with gratitude in our hearts and a renewed appreciation for the values of tradition, unity, and excellence that the Garden Party embodies.
Some of you may be interested to know that the Royal Garden Parties were started by Queen Victoria on 22nd June 1868. Her Majesty described the day as Splendid and not too hot. Three take place each year with approximately 8000 guests on each occasion from all walks of life.
